Florida Hurricanes

It all started at the Aug 11th monthly meeting of S.T.A.R. Guild, the local astrology study group. Cindy, who has natal Mars on her Virgo Ascendant and transiting Pluto in the 4th, suggested that we prepare to talk about transiting Mars in Virgo square transiting Pluto at the Sep meeting. This topic was expanded to the mutable aspects of September with emphasis on Mars making various aspects as it approached Jupiter. Well, we didn’t have our September meeting due to the effects of these aspects, namely, four hurricanes. When we met in October, we studied the four hurricane landfall charts (1) and saw the stellar logic behind the hurricanes. Here is the story.

First, one of the founding members, Jennie, pointed out that Florida is a Sun in Pisces state. Mars is also mutable in late Sagittarius in the Florida chart. These mutables may be the main reason that the 4 hurricanes affected Florida. These four in order are Charley, a cat 4, which hit Charlotte Harbor on Aug. 13th at 3:45 pm with 145mph winds. Next came Frances, a slow moving cat 2, that hit Sewall’s Point at 1:00am on Sep 5th with 105mph winds. Ivan, the terrible cat 3, hit Gulf Shores Al. (which is really near Pensacola) at 3:00 am, Sep 16th with 130 mph winds. Finally, Jeanne, a cat 3, actually looped around out in the Atlantic to come see us on Sep 25th at 11:50 pm around Stuart with winds of 120 mph. Together they did about $20 billion in damage and caused enormous personal suffering. Now let’s look at the logic of the charts.

For Charley, an Ascendant of 16 Sagittarius and a Midheaven of 27 Virgo show mutable signs on the angles. This is interesting because mutables are where the action is. Note that Pluto, the annihilation planet, is close to the Ascendant and Mars is elevated in Virgo with Mercury and Jupiter and is opposing Uranus. Mars is moving toward the square with Pluto as Mars approaches Jupiter. The Moon is in wet Cancer very close to Saturn in the financial 8th house. This is an impressive way to depict a watery event that causes damage to homes and property. Overall, in Charley’s chart, the mutables, Pluto, Mars, and Saturn are well represented for this destructive event.

Slow moving Frances beat us half to death for a long time. Once again an Ascendant of 23 Gemini and a Midheaven of 8 Pisces place mutables on the angles. This time Pluto opposes the Ascendant and Venus is near Saturn in Cancer in the financial 2nd house. The Virgo group in the 4th contains Mars and Jupiter and Mars closely approaches the square with Pluto. A Taurus Moon square Mercury in Leo adds fixity to the slow moving storm. This chart is essentially the verso of Charley and our mutable signs and destructive planetary players continue to be well represented.

Ivan has angles of mixed quality with Leo rising and Aries culminating. But both the Sun and Mars are very close to each other in Virgo in the 2nd and they square Pluto. Mars is getting closer to Jupiter. The Leo Ascendant is near Venus which opposes Neptune. This looks like storm surge which the gulf coast is susceptible to due to low dune elevation. In the chart of the gulf coast smashing hurricane, Camile, the Ascendant opposes Neptune. With Ivan, Saturn is above the Ascendant at landfall when the eye of the hurricane passes over. Note that the eye wall hits before the eye and causes great damage, so Saturn would have been closer to the Ascendant at the earlier time. I watched weatherman on cable citing 2:30 for Pensacola’s and 2:50 for Gulf Shore’s initial lashing. Once again, the 1969 Cat 5, Camille had Saturn above the Ascendant with both in Taurus. Finally, looking back at Ivan, let’s note that the Libra Moon is moving toward of square to Saturn. The 10 degree 0rb is large but the windy, wet aspect is a good describer of the event.

Jeanne and Frances hit two points on the east Florida coast within about 10 miles of each other on weekends three weeks apart. Both charts have a Gemini Ascendant opposing Pluto. In Jeanne’s chart Mercury is in Virgo close to Mars and Mars is very close to a Libra Jupiter. The conjunction of Mars and Jupiter happened the next day while things were still blowing. The Moon is in a nice wet Pisces at the top of the chart within a degree of Uranus. Saturn is uninteresting in aspect but is racking up bills in the 2nd in Cancer.

Looking back at the four charts, we see strong harsh activity in mutables. Mars and Pluto are very active in all charts and Saturn in three. With Mars and Jupiter in the same sign and later, very close, I consider this the main correspondent of the event.

Finally, in Brevard Co. we pride ourselves on being hurricane untouchable. In quite a chunk of recorded time, we have not had a direct hit. This is still true with these landfalls happening south of us but we did get category 1 and 2 storm winds and with Frances, it lasted a long time. We seem to have an attitude around here. First, we thought we were above the fray. Now after these two good slaps from these twins within three weeks, we think we can take anything. If you think watching us vote is interesting, try watching us next August and September. I think many more people will be defying evacuation orders. After surviving Frances, many more of us stayed for Jeanne. Some of us even ran, jumped, danced, and spit into it. I expect this to be a new attitude for a while for good or for bad. And what’s behind this? What else! Remember, we are a Pisces state. Isn’t Uranus in Pisces? And what about Cindy with natal Mars on her Ascendant, Pluto transiting her 4th, and natal Saturn in Libra in the 2nd? Following orders, she evacuated right into the eye of the storm, Frances. Her home has sustained serious damage. (2)
