Astrology – What Is It and What Can It Do For You?
Or, the Pope, Bill Clinton, Mick Jaeger, and my Dogs.

It is wonderful that Astrology can give us insight into the past, present, and future. From the look of most printed material on Astrology, one would guess that people are most interested in the future. I wish there was a little less emphasis on this and more appreciation for the other things that it can do for us. It can help us to understand so many things that it increases our happiness and brings more meaning into our lives. What are some of the specific things that Astrology can do for us? It can give us insight into almost any thing, person, or situation. It empowers us, helps us to make better decisions, brings us closer to God, and can make us better people.

How does it give us insight?

We all remember the images of the Pope’s funeral. At the end of the liturgy the pall bearers carried the casket toward the entrance of St. Peter’s where it would disappear as they entered it. They stopped at the entrance and turned to face the crowd as if to say good-bye. In the Pope’s chart, the map of the sky that he was born under, he has harmony loving Libra rising with athletic Mars very close to the Ascendant. This is the point in the chart associated with life. On the day of the funeral, there was a solar eclipse in the sign Aries, almost exactly opposite this point. How appropriate for his funeral to happen with the Sun and Moon setting in his chart opposite the point of life. Jupiter, the religious planet was in Libra at this time and on his Ascendant. His death was certainly a religious affair. This is just the start of it. The new Pope Benedict XVI has an Aries Sun and a Libra Moon. Do these signs sound familiar? No wonder he and the former Pope have a close long term relationship. The Sun and Moon of one cut across the Ascendant and Descendant of the other. We are not done yet. The chart of the revolutionary Vatican II Council that happened during the revolutionary 60’s has the Moon in Libra and the Sun in Aries. There are those signs again. This chart is considered to be the chart of the modern church by some astrologers. So this relationship shows us that a former Pope and the current Pope and the modern Church are intimately involved. Doesn’t this explain a lot? And isn’t that a nice feeling. This type of insight shows us that events are happening at the right time and that they are part of some plan and have meaning. If you think this is a little too much emphasis on religious figures, let’s look at Mick Jaeger and Bill Clinton. Sir Mick who has achieving Saturn near the Ascendant was knighted by a Saturn ruled Queen. But better yet, he has Uranus on the Ascendant, that special point of life place. Uranus is a wild and crazy planet. Do you think that’s okay for a rock star? Plus he has the Sun, Jupiter, Mercury and the node in creative, willful Leo. Our ex President, who never met a relationship that he didn’t like, has Mars, Neptune, Venus, and Jupiter in the relationship sign, Libra, and in the Rising sign or Ascendant. For another example, take my dogs. I have two toy poodles that are unrelated by blood. They both have their Moons in the sign, Aquarius. Since the Moon is associated with the details of daily life and these guys spend every day together, it is appropriate that they have the same Moon. Speaking of the same Moon, I know a guy whose wife and mother have Moon’s within two minutes of each other. The two most important women in his life have something almost exactly alike. If we know Astrology and use it, we see marvelous and meaningful connections everywhere.

How does Astrology empower us?

The animus mundi or soul of the world, is shown by the planets and signs in the sky at any time. When a person is born they are represented by a moment in the animus mundi. Studying the chart of this moment tells the person who they are and what their life is like. They are their own unique person and this tool can help them know themselves and accept themselves better. How many times have we had to defend ourselves against someone’s notion that we should be someone other than who we are? Once we know and accept ourselves, we can stop doing this and also accept others. Astrology is not the only way to do this but it is one method.

How can it help us make better decisions?

We can make better decisions by gathering good information. If I’m thinking about marrying someone, I can look at his chart and find out who he is. I can look at my own transits and see the influences that I am operating under and note his influences also. I can plot his planets around my chart and mine around his and see what connections define the relationship. I can pick a great day for the union, when the energies harmonize with the activity at hand. This type of approach can be applied to almost any important activity.

How can Astrology move us closer to God?

Many know that astrology is part of eastern religion, but it is part of the western tradition also. The fixed signs are mentioned as the lion, bull, eagle, and man in the Old Testament in Ezekiel and in the New in Revelations. In the latter, they are seen in John’s vision surrounding the throne of God. They are part of the power structure of God, or how He works. In Rabbi Joel Dobin’s book, “To rule both Day and Night” he cites many references to the use and validity of astrology in the Talmud and Midrash. He notes the duty that we have to study how God works. How can we not feel close to God when we see the connection between events in his holy sky and in our lives and in the world. In fact, it occurred to me the other day while viewing a spectacular crimson sunset, that the worst event that ever happed to me, came to me through that beautiful sky.

How can Astrology make us better people?

Over time a list of positive and negative qualities have developed under each sign and planet. Awareness of this list defines for us what we should strive for and strive against. Plus, even as we became comfortable with who we are, we should allow others to define and be comfortable with who they are. Finally as empowered people, we can empower others rather that stoop to power struggles.
